The Shelter Pet Enrichment Fund is CMPD Animal Care & Control's 501c3 partner.
Since 2011, the Shelter Pet Enrichment Fund (SPEF) has provided resources necessary to assist CMPD Animal Care & Control’s (CMPD-ACC) training programs and enhance the lives of pets while at the shelter. Board members collaborate with the shelter manager, trainer, and other staff to ensure all enrichment needs are met and determine opportunities to enhance the environment. SPEF’s 2015 goal is to align with CMPD-ACC’s goal of preventing animals from entering the shelter by developing enrichment and training resources for the Charlotte community.
Partner with CMPD Animal Care & Control to fund innovative enrichment programs that create happy pets in the Charlotte community.
What We Do
Train to Adopt
Utilizes positive reinforcement training, play time, and environmental enrichment to decrease the stress and stress-related behaviors that result from being in kennel confinement for long periods of time.
The KONG Enrichment Program
Was developed to ease the mental boredom that shelter dogs endure on a daily basis.
NylabonesAre used to provide long-lasting entertainment for the shelter dogs in an effort to fight boredom, loneliness, and separation anxiety, as well as to promote good dental hygiene and satisfy a dog’s natural urge to chew.
Are used by shelter volunteers to reinforce the training the dogs are receiving from the trainer, encourage positive interaction with people, or just because.
SPEF supports the hard work of the shelter staff through cook outs and holiday survival kits. We are so grateful for all of the hard work and dedication of the staff.
In an effort to reduce the number of animals entering the shelter, SPEF is collaborating with CMPD-ACC to develop community resource programs focused on training. SPEF’s goal is to launch a Training Resources on this website in August. In early 2016, SPEF’s goal is to expand the program by offering additional training resources to dogs in danger of surrender due to behavior issues.
How We Do It
As SPEF launches and grows, we will raise funds through strategic partnerships and fund raising initiatives. It is our goal not only increase adoptions, but expand awareness by reaching new demographics through targeted marketing and PR campaigns. With the continued support of the city we will maximize the full potential of the shelter by utilizing enrichment programs and innovative technology to create an engaging environment for the public and end the euthanasia of healthy, adoptable animals.
